Description
Introduced in the US in 1882, Golden Fishpole Bamboo is one of if not the most widely planted in the U.S., for good reason. It isn’t too tall and is one of the strongest and most upright making it the perfect choice for a dense privacy screen or hedge, even close to walkways and driveways. The strong, upright canes are green but will turn golden-yellow when exposed to direct sun light. Golden Bamboo is a fast grower that you can expect to reach 15 feet tall or more in USDA Zone 6 and 25 to 30 feet tall in zones further south. The stand is thick and impenetrable for a dense tall hedge or privacy screen or as a specimen in large containers.Â
Golden Bamboo loves the sun but will also grow in part shade and is hardy to 5°F. Golden Bamboo bamboo will drop foliage when temperatures drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes can be killed when temps drop to -5. Unless temps drop to -30 degrees F the root system of established well mulched groves will put up new canes each Spring.
In colder regions, this species forms tight groves versus the more open groves in warmer climate zones. Culms are excellent wood quality and the new shoots are edible.

Growing Preferences
Golden Bamboo is easy to grow in most any moist and well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun for yellow cane color, though some shade is okay. Very drought tolerant when established.Does not like constantly wet soil or standing water.
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Golden Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.

The two containers of golden fishpole bamboo were huge snd in great condition. They were even bigger than expected and they arrived on time. Thank you so much for shipping such healthy plants. They were about 5 to 6′ tall when I had expected 3 to 4′. Thank you again.——————————————————–You’re welcome! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! This fishpole bamboo plant and two other bamboo I ordered arrived as such happy plants—lush and meticulously packaged. No sooner was the fishpole in the ground than it sent up three perfect shoots, all larger than the original cane. I put a ring of chicken wire around it temporarily as a sign to nearby critters that the salad bar is closed …. But a day later I had to cut a section out of the wire to allow for the rapid and slightly angled growth of one of the shoots. I also ordered an arrow (japonica) and giant leaf bamboo and they are doing fine, too.. The former is very tall with a consequent fragility but it got here with no bends or breaks, 8 or 9’ tall. I feel confident that anything I order from Wilson Bros will be great. That’s not true for all nurseries in the southeast. I ordered a root clump of black bamboo from another placed with two T’s in the name and it was dead from the start. I spend a year trying to get a replacement but could never prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was, in fact, dead. I failed to provide a certificate from the plant coroner. Anyway, enough of that. I will have to work hard to stop myself from ordering more plants from Wilson Bros this year.——————————————Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! I ordered this bamboo for a backyard project. They came well package in tall cardboard boxes. The plants arrived very fast and in healthy condition. In contrast, at the same time I ordered another variety of bamboo from a different online nursery and they came folded up in smaller boxes with broken culms and didn’t seem as healthy. That was a bit disappointing. I will definitely be ordering from you guys at Wilson Bros Gardens again for all my plant needs.————————————Thanks for the photos!
