Description

Temple Bamboo, also called Japanese Palm, is a highly attractive and stately selection with very erect and straight canes that age to a beautiful purple or dark reddish color, which is why it is often referred to as a red bamboo. With foliage only at the top one third of mature canes this stately beauty resembles a palm tree! One really unique thing about this bamboo is how the short branches and foliage typically emerge at the top of the cane and grow down the cane over time. This species has quasi persistent culm sheaths. Temple Bamboo has a moderate to fast growth rate that you can expect to reach up to 30 feet tall. Handles salt spray conditions so is suitable for use in coastal landscapes. Cold hardy to -0°F

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bamboo variety is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Temple Bamboo is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It handles salt spray well in coastal environments. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, most bamboo will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress.

How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors

Temple Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots Temple Bamboo can be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
