Description
One of the most popular collector’s bamboos available, the Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow year round outdoors where temperatures don’t drop below 20 degrees F. Otherwise, in colder climates it is ideal for growing indoors as a houseplant, where it won’t reach near the size it does when growing outdoors. When established it is extremely drought tolerant but is also tolerant of wet soils.
An amazing conversation piece, in hot and dry conditions the internodes of the Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo will swell like a “belly,” hence the name. Sometimes called “Painted Buddha Belly” because its green canes turn to a golden-yellow pinstriped with dark green. The lush, deep to bright green leaves contrast beautifully with the yellow canes. He grows from 35 to 50 feet in height (8 to 15 feet in pots) with a tight-clumping form, and gracefully arching canes that give the entire pant a vase-like shape. A showcase in the garden or containers!
Note: We grow one crop of the clumping bamboo (Bambusa) varieties annually. Because they will not tolerate temperatures below 12 to 20 degrees F, to avoid damage to plants during transit we begin shipping these in April or May, depending on your location. Click here if you are looking for cold hardy bamboo

Growing Preferences
The Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo is very easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil and full sun to part shade. Faster growth can be expected with more sun and consistently moist soil. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established but will also tolerate a wet soil. Responds very well to pruning to control height and to form attractive topiary specimens. Feed three times a year in spring, summer and fall with a natural fertilizer, palm food, or good shrub & tree fertilizer.
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Yellow Buddha Belly Bamboo is a clumping bamboo that does not require any control to contain it. That said, the clump can grow 6 to 8 feet wide over time. If you want to contain it to a smaller area this can be done. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. Bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
